WHAT THE PRESS SAY
"Britain's Best Cottages With Moorings
Catch the wind on Skye
You could be forgiven for humming any number of old folk-pop favourites in this remote holiday cottage. Lochbay Boathouse, a characterful retreat on Skye, is where the Scottish singer Donovan stayed at the height of his fame. He converted the boathouse into a simple cottage; George Harrison and Patti Boyd were among his guests.
Given this is Scotland, the sunshine might not come softly through your window, yet it's a unique place and perfect for de-stressing. Enjoy lazy mornings in an antique four-poster, looking out towards the islands of Isay and Mingay. Other rooms give uninterrupted views of Stein fishing village and across the bay itself.
There is a small tidal harbour, suitable for shallow-draught boats, with plenty of parking space for your trailer.
Putter across the loch and round the tip of the peninsula to the turquoise waters of Coral Beach, one of the finest in Scotland. Take a pair of binoculars: the loch is home to seals and otters, eagles and heron. Drop anchor and picnic on the tiny uninhabited islands of Isay and Clett, both briefly owned by Donovan. Locals have spotted whales from here. Round off the day at the 18th-century Stein Inn, Skye's oldest pub, and enjoy a dram of local Talisker. Neighbouring Loch Bay Seafood Restaurant serves excellent fish and seafood and has great views over the bay."

"Remote Bolt Holes
Lochbay Boathouse, Isle of Skye
The former boathouse for the Waternish estate in northwest Skye has seen a few bonnie craft in its time. Isolated, on the edge of a remote sliver of land, it has an Arts and Crafts-style interior. Tiny Stein harbour is nearby, with the inimitable Loch Bay Seafood Restaurant."
